A Gross Pollutant Trap (GPT) or Stormwater Quality Improvement Device (SQID) is an underground filter or catchment device used to collect stormwater pollutants such as rubbish, sediment, waste, and debris and prevent them from going back into the environment and waterways.
A GPT or SQID captures and separates anything that floats or sinks from the water to allow the water to keep flowing downstream hence the importance of regularly conducted inspections and cleaning. Gross Pollutant Traps can only filter pollutants and contaminants from washing into stormwater drainage systems and continue to allow water to flow through the waterways if the grates are clean and serviced regularly.
